Two out of every three people in India reside in villages wherein one out of every two persons are engaged in agriculture. Thus, India’s development is possible only through development of rural areas. Rural India development rests on two broad pillars – economic development and social transformation. Dhara For Sustaining Life has two-pronged focus in the Rural India:

Rural and Community Development
Introduction
Since the first five-year plan, India has focussed on rural development. First through Community Development Program through government and community partnership. Later, through Integrated Rural Development Program which was upgraded into Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY). Today, the major programs for Rural and Community development:
- Deendayal Antodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) and Mission Antodaya
- Deendayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushal Yojana (DDUGKY)
- Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS)
- Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)
- Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAANJHI)
- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-G)
- Swachh Bharat Mission – Grameen
- Jal Jeevan Mission – Har Ghar Jal
- Ujjwala Yojana
- PAHAL Scheme
- Saubhagya Yojana
- UJALA Scheme
- Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan
- e-Panchayat and BharatNet program
- Digital India program – Common Service Centre, National Geo-informatics centre, vikaspedia.in, mygov.in, UMANG, National Health Portal etc.
There are several initiatives by the State governments also working towards holistic development in the sector. All these initiatives and schemes require services of grassroot level voluntary organizations to make the initiative truly inclusive and sustainable.
Dhara’s Vision and Mission
Dhara For Sustaining Life is committed to building a strong, inclusive, clean and sustainable India. That’s why we give special focus on rural areas. We aim to involve all the stakeholders in writing the growth story of the area. We aim to make rural communities truly democratic where development is for the people, of the people and by the people. We strive towards effectively implementing government schemes and programs in partnership with relevant stakeholders in order to generate positive outcomes. We aim to make the communities self-sufficient. We aim to make growth inclusive through empowering women and youth with skills, education and livelihood opportunities. We aim to generate environment consciousness as well as inculcate sense of social hygiene along with personal hygiene.
Dhara’s Activities
- Surveying and collecting data regarding intervention opportunities in sectors like education, health, transparency and accountability in governance, human resource development, environment conservation, pollution control and citizen welfare
- Suggesting areas requiring policy level decisions or changes to the design and implementation of policies in order to ensure effectiveness
- Facilitating formation of women self help groups to promote livelihood and make them financially and socially empowered
- Partnering with local change agents in order to synergize efforts of rural and community development
- Creating citizen awareness and encouraging attitudinal reformation
